The Washington Times has always focused on content. After careful review, we determined that the best way to have the top tools to produce and publish that content is to release the source code of our in-house tools and encourage collaboration.

The source code is released under the permissive Apache License, version 2.0. The initial tools released are:

  • django-projectmgr, a source code repository manager and issue tracking application. It allows threaded discussion of bugs and features, separation of bugs, features and tasks and easy creation of source code repositories for either public or private consumption.

  • django-supertagging, an interface to the Open Calais service for semantic markup.

  • django-massmedia, a multi-media management application. It can create galleries with multiple media types within, allows mass uploads with an archive file, and has a plugin for fckeditor for embedding the objects from a rich text editor.

  • django-clickpass, an interface to the clickpass.com OpenID service that allows users to create an account with a Google, Yahoo!, Facebook, Hotmail or AIM account.

The opensource.washingtontimes.com web site will be hosting the code and issue tracking software, using django-projectmgr.

Great job! Great to see a large media player such as you are taking steps in this direction. I look forward to trying out your apps!
Thanks, Post! This is a tremendous offer back to the community! ...and it's great to see the Django Project adoption in these releases.
erm, I mean, "Thanks, Times!". I'm sorry about that slip, guys. I meant well.
Thimes.
I was in the starting blocks to use django-supertagging. Unfortunatly it seems that I cannot have access yet to the source. The project is not yet listed there: http://opensource.washingtontimes.com/projects/ Am I missing something ? Thank you for open sourcing this. --yml
@yml: try this location instead: http://opensource.washingtontimes.com/projects/public/django-supertagging/trunk/
This is great news! Any one of these applications would be welcome, but all four? Excellent. One question: is there a reason why django-supertagging is in a private repository?
Supertagging is public now.
Wonderful news ! Thanks a lot for considering Open Source development model, that's a great initiative and a great way to improve your code base. However I have two questions .. First I don't find anywhere the repository url.. How can we checkout the source code (assuming you are using a VCS) ? The the seconds, which is also important.. under which license are you releasing these projects ?
Thanks! This is a great move for the Django community.
This is great, nice move. Had an eye on massmedia and looks promising. Thanks
Bravo!
Wow! These look to be great apps. Would you all be interested in helping organize a DC Django group with us?
Any chance on some screenshots of the massmedia plugin?
Mucho thankso, Washington Times!
Tack on that! (Tack is Swedish for "Thank you.")
Hey, guys, like that's so cool!
It looks great! Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for sharing. Way to go. This is what makes you the leader of the pack and not the victim of change.
awesome! hats off to you guys! Thanks a lot :)
Gah, massmedia is exactly what I needed a week ago. Ended up sorta starting a project called django-media-uploads, very similar concept. It's really my first contribution to the Django community but is no where near ready. http://github.com/amccloud/django-media-uploads/
As one open source publisher to another, Squiz.net salute you. We went open source with our web CMS 10 years ago and hundreds of governemtn and large client installs later we think you will really see the benefits of this initiative. We are happy to share experience if we can. Good luck.
Very nice! Thanks for sharing your hard work, it's very appreciated :)
Do you remember Pamela Jones from Groklaw? First some background... The first anti-SCO article was published by Pamela Jones on May 17, 2003 and was titled "SCO Falls Downstairs, Hitting Its Head On Every Step". A few days later, she published "Speaking of HIPAA, Do MS's EULAs Violate It?". The original version of this document is still found at http://radio.weblogs.com/0120124/2003/05/22.html . "Speaking of HIPAA, Do MS's EULAs Violate It?" helped relate Pamela Jones of Groklaw to a company named MedAbiliti. One month earlier, MedAbiliti announced "Exemplar International Chooses MedAbiliti for HIPAA Compliance". This press release mentioned Pamela Jones as director for public affairs at MedAbiliti. What product was sold by MedAbiliti? MedAbiliti sold its major product named XM Network to Exemplar International, Inc. XM Network run on Linux and was written on open source software. Exemplar International is known today as Examinetics. The business relation between MedAbiliti and Exemplar International, Inc. was announced on February 18, 2003. About 2 weeks after, SCO filed its lawsuit against IBM. Did Exemplar International questioned MedAbiliti about XM Network and the implications of the SCO lawsuit? Enter Pamela Jones, director for public affairs at MedAbiliti. The Washington Times has given a great example of cooperation to the open-source community unlike the company Pamela Jones worked for in 2003. Groklaw constantly preaches about open source values, yet its parent company MedAbiliti didn't share XM Network with the community. All documents related to the above are still available in their original sources of publications. The Groklaw - Pamela Jones timeline at http://www.krsaborio.net/research/linux/related/groklaw.htm provides copies of all the documents to easily understand the facts.
I think your tinfoil hat is too tight, its making you sound crazy!
Wow I'm impressed, Kudos.
Obama is all about Open Source, look it up, it's an anti-capitalist leftist philosophy. I expect better from WT.
In order to fight the anti-capitalist leftist philosophy, I suggest you start paying to use google since it uses Linux servers. Oh, and why don't you donate to Washington Times in the name of capitalism for your comment because it also went through open source servers.
Really? Do you really associate "open source" with politics rather than, um--computers?! I think your disappointment is a bit misguided. FUN FACTS: ***Microsoft is going more and more open-source (http://arstechnica.com/microsoft/news/2008/12/microsoft-releases-open-source-cms-oxite-to-developers.ars). ***All the web sites you visit, that is, everything viewed via a web browser, is also open-source (to see it for yourself: [ALT+V, C] in Internet Explorer. ...because, based on your comment, I know for a fact you're using IE) small exception: Adobe Flash, compiled Java applets, etc. CONCLUSION: Depending upon the severity of your disappointment and/or your conviction to do anything about it, you should cease using Windows and the Internet. "Goodbye" (say like that AOL guy).
Open Source is "I voluntarily share my work ..." Leftist view is "You must give your work ..." The same as Charity is when I decide to give, Socialism is when the government takes from me to give as they see fit. Thank you WT for your support of the Django concept!!
Kudos, Richard Dee. Well clarified.

Thank you for supporting Django so much!
Hey, Thanks for doing this. Im definitely using all these resources. Hope to return the favor with my own collection!
This is a great move! Thank you for contributing! I wish the New York Times read this and follow in your footsteps - in particular with some of the wonderful Flash presentation solutions they have over there. :)
Hello, It would also be useful to have a mailing list to discuss some of the issue with the developers. I have been recently working with django-supertagging and while doing this I open some feature requests and bug reports. It would make the process using and improving these apps a bit easier. Thank you for sharing the source code with us. --yml
This is really good idea, especially when FOSS is still stronger and soon we will observe decrease in MS businesses (comment from Poland)
Kudos, Richard Dee. Well clarified.
